Difference between a man and a woman

God surely had a sense of humour when He gave me four men!  I am sure He handpicked the women whom He gave more than one males to share their lives with!  Luckily I have been blessed with a good sense of humour and always see the funny in a situation!

My hubby and myself decided that these extra kilos we've been picking up lately needs to go....so we started walking.  After a few walks, we decided to join the local gym.  Not being very active lately, we have difficulty fitting into the clothes in the cupboard, and therefor had nothing to wear to gym!

So yesterday we went shopping for a few t-shirts and pants.  Firstly I bought some t-shirts, so my darling hubby asked me if I don't need a bigger size!  I assured him that the ones I had was fine......then we went to another shop to get him some pants.....he took a pair and asked me whether I think they won't be too big!  Looking at the pants, I was sure they were going to be way too small!  But saying that to him would be like fuel on the fire!  So I suggested that he should try it on.  After spending some time in the fitting room, he came out laughing.......they were too small.....and if I thought so before sending him to the fitting room!  We had a great laugh!  I fit into my T's well and would have drowned in the ones he wanted to give me and he took a larger pair of pants! Ha Ha Ha!

My friend sent me this one some time ago, and I think it suits this situation well!

project 64**********peanut butter cookies*****

The other day they had a special on a new brand of peanut butter.  Being penny-wise, I decided to buy one as peanut butter is really getting expensive now.  Not so penny-wise.....the kids hated it!  Now I had a large container of 'not so nice' peanut butter.....so I made peanut butter cookies.....and they finished every single one of them!

You will need:
1/2 cup peanut butter
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg
1/2 tsp vanilla
1 1/4 cup flour
3/4 tsp baking soda
1/4 t salt

Mix everything.  Roll in balls and press down.  Bake for 10-12 minutes @ 180*C.

(GOT THIS FROM PINTEREST....one of the recipes that was actually there when you go into the page!  Is it just my bad luck, or do you have the same problem?  Note saying that the page can not be open due to spam, or just not on the website....you see a great picture and you can not get the recipe!  Frustrating!)

Project 63.....framing finds from nature

I love picking up seeds, feathers, pieces of driftwood, shells, pebbles.....name it....

My sister made me these frames from off-cut pieces of wood some time ago.  I have glued clear glass to the backs and simply glued my find onto the glass.  Pretty easy, and they look stunning.

I hung three of them beneath each other, but it depends how big your frame is.

Last night I walked through the open field across our house and saw some branches.  Unfortunately hubby was with me, so I'll have to go again to pick them up!  Always a need for something!

PROJECT 62......CHICKEN IN WINE

This is an easy version of the french 'coc Au vine', except that I did not put celery stalks in as my family can not appreciate it!  In stead there of I've put some leeks as I had some in my food garden! I mean, no recipe is set in gold.....make it your own by taking something out, and adding something else......as long as you enjoy the end result!

You will need:
50 ml olive oil
1,5 kg chicken pieces
30 ml butter
16 baby onions(I've used four large ones  cut into quarters, as I could not find baby ones the last time I've made it)
1-2 whole garlic houses(this might sound like a lot, but I promise you, it does not over power the meat....just use that much the first time you cook this!  There after you can adjust to taste, but I am sure you are not going to do it!)
5 twigs of fresh thyme
3 celery stalks(I've omitted and added leeks)
200g bacon diced
250 g mixed mushrooms
500 ml chicken stock
150 ml dry white wine(even on this one I used red before, and even though I know you normally use white wine with white meat, it turned out pretty good, and I even think it tasted better with the red wine!)
25 ml cake flour
150 ml fresh cream

1.  Heat the oil, and brown the meat.  Remove from the pan.
2.  Add butter and sort the onion, garlic and thyme for two minutes.  Add the celery and bacon, add the lid and cook for 3 minutes.
3.  Add the mushrooms and stir through.  Place your chicken in an oven dish.  Pour this mixture on top.  Add half the wine and half the chicken stock.  Cook at 180*C for 30-45 minutes.
4.  Remove from the oven and pour the liquid off in a sauce pan together with rest of chicken stock and wine.  Thicken the sauce with the flour.  Pour the sauce over the chicken and season with black pepper.

This is so good.....you have to serve it with freshly baked bread, as the sauce needs something to soak it up!  Even better the next day for breakfast...or lunch....or in between if there is something left!

PROJECT 61........tiny bow

My mom came to visit and was quite intrigued with the little bows on my button bottles.

I showed he how to do them.  I've seen on the net how  to, and they are soo pretty!

All you need is a fork and your ribbon......and follow the pictures....

You fold the ribbon over two of the  teeth of the fork and take the  loose end to the back. Then do the same with the other two teeth, but bring the loose end to the front.  Take both ends to the top and tie a knot.  Remove from the fork and you have a petite little bow.  You can now cut the loose ends shorter if you want to.

Sweet!

project 60.......chocolate cookies

This is my own recipe......I've tried a lot of chocolate cookie recipes, but when I made these from no recipe, my sons said......"these are good!  You can make them again....hope you saved the recipe!"  Luckily I wrote everything down as I figured it out......so here's the recipe.....

Mix together:

2 1/2 cups of flour, 1/2 cup cocoa powder, 1 tsp baking soda, 1 cup butter/margarine, 1 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1/2 cup white sugar, 2 eggs, 2 t vanilla, 1/2 t salt, 1 cup coconut

Roll balls and press down with a fork.  Bake for 10 minutes @ 180*C

project 59........planter boxes

I used old tomato crates to do these planter boxes.

I simply gave them a water wash, written onto them with waxed crayons, added a little glitter here and there and placed my plastic pots inside.  I planted the pots with seeds and place the bottom end of soda bottles over it to make a small terrarium for the seeds to germinate.

I love gardening, but don't have success with growing plants from seeds.  As I work shifts I sometimes forget to water them.

I placed these containers on my patio right at the back door.  I have to pass them daily, so I water them regularly.  And they look neat standing in a row.

I've made beaded insects as plant markers, but will show you that some other time......

pr0ject 58.......faboulous pork stew

I don't like pork, but this recipe is one of my favourites!

I don't know where I got it, or how it was adapted over the years to what it is today, but enjoy it!

I serve it with rice.

You will need:

Some stewing pork meat
coarse salt and freshly grounded black pepper
olive oil
2 onions,sliced
1-2 chillies
2 heaped tbsp paprika
2 tsp caraway seeds
1 tsp oregano
1-3 green/red/yellow peppers/mixture of the three
3-4 tomatoes
1 packet of tomato puree/ small tin
4 tbsp balsamic vinegar
whole small potatoes, green beans, patty pans and mushrooms

Brown the meat in the olive oil.  Add all the ingredients up to the tomatoes with.  Add some water and cook for about an hour.  Add the potatoes and cook another 1/2 hour.  Then the beans and patty pans and cook another 15 minutes.  Add the tomato puree, balsamic and mushrooms and cook through for another 5 minutes.

If I don't have patty pans I just omit it.  I sometimes add a packet of olives.  It is yours to try out.

PROJECT 57 ----MIXED MEDIUM PICTURES

I am always looking for something I can make out of nothing!  Something that will basically cost me nothing to make.....

I saw so many ideas of paper mache on pinterest that I had to try it again.  I have done it years ago and forgot what fun it was!

I made these pictures out of recycled photo frame backs which I covered with newspaper, and then gave them a thin layer of paint.  I modge podged them to seal it off.  I then used boxes to make the doll, and the hearts are also pieces of cereal box that I have taped together with masking tape.  I used a smaller box in the inside to give it a three dimensional look.  The dolls hands and shoes, as well as the golden heart were formed out of egg carton pulp.  What an instant and exciting idea for paper mulch!  I simply soaked the boxes in some water!  I then sealed it with modge podge when it was dry and painted it.  The dolls face is a picture from a magazine that I decoupaged to the smaller box.  The legs are pieces of dowel sticks.  I decoupaged the cereal carton box heart with newspaper first and then with coloured paper.

Use whatever you have lying around to decorate them.

This was fun making something out of really nothing!

The boys are just a little worried now because I said I am going to hang them in their bathroom!

Wednesday 22 August 2012

Some weeks just go faster than others!  I can not believe that I am at the end of another off week again!  I am starting another weeks night duty tonight and it feels like I haven't done much this week!

I am cooking my favourite pork stew for supper and think I'll take a snap to upload it later on this week.  As I said before.... pork is not my favourite meat..... but this one I love!  Maybe it is the balsamic.....I love balsamic vinegar!

The family are quiet....not much happened this week....

My eldest son is in matric this year and we had to go and buy matric farewell clothes two days ago....what a mission!  What mom thinks is cool, is not so cool for him!  At least we got an outfit and I am sure he is going to look just great!  The problem now is to get him and the girl there, as every year the transport to the function is more extravagant.  Can you believe he wanted a horse with a cart!  Well, I could not find one in our small town, and suppose that will be my next weeks headache....finding a cool way of transport!  I suggested pushing he in on a wheelbarrow as he is really building some heavy muscles in the gym lately......he was not impressed!  I thought he could show off the muscles a little!  Ha ha!

Well.....enjoy your week!  Hope to do a post or two this coming week, bur it all depends on how busy I am during the night, as casualty can sometimes be strenuous!  But anyhow.....try some of the stuff I've posted up till now.....I am sure you will find something to keep you going!

Bye now!

Project 56************how to get all your biscuits the same size

Ever thought how on earth are you going to get all your home made biscuits the same size?

Let me show you what I use......a 12.5ml measuring spoon!  Simply measure your cookie dough and then roll it in balls......perfectly the same size!

Nifty tip I'd say!

PROJECT 55--------Tomato sauce

If you have a pizza base(previous project) you will need a tomato sauce.  This one as well I prefer to make myself.  It just taste sooo much better!

I started making this one a few years ago when my vegetable garden produced a very good crop.  I am still making it!

I originally got the recipe from one of my Jamie Oliver cookbooks, but adapted here and there.  Sorry Jamie!  You are still my favourite in the kitchen!

To make 500 ml:

1 large onion
5 ml fennel seeds
1 celery stick chopped
olive oil
thumb nail piece of fresh ginger
2 cloves of garlic crushed
1/2 fresh red chili deseeded
1'2 green pepper chopped
bunch of fresh thyme(originally it had basil, but I could never get my basil to grow!)
1 tablespoon coriander seeds
2 cloves
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
salt
1 kg tomatoes
200 ml brown vinegar
70 g brown sugar

Place all the veggies in a heavy bottom pot with a little olive oil, as well as the ginger, garlic and fresh herbs, salt and pepper.  Cook until soft and add water.Cook until it reduced to half the volume.  Place all the other herbs and spices in a piece of muslin and add it to the veggies.  Add the sugar and vinegar as well.  Cook until it thickens.

Remove the spices.  When I am in a hurry I bottle it just like this, pips and all, then I use it for pizza and cooking or even as a base sauce when making a relish when we are having'pap' with our 'braai'.   A typical South African way of eating.

When I am not so hasty, I strain it trough a sieve.  Great on eggs, burgers, name it .....anything that needs tomato sauce!

Bottle it in hot sterilised jars and seal hot.   Worthwhile the effort!

project 54--------pizza dough

Making your own pizza dough is so much better than shop bought ones!  I love shortcut, but pizza dough....I make it myself....

Knead together: 250 ml flour, 5 ml instant yeast, 5 ml sugar, 2 ml salt, 75 ml lukewarm water and 10 ml butter or margarine. Allow to double in its size.  Knee down and press in a pizza plate.  I normally use a rolling pin.

The dough can also be frozen.  I have made some already rolled bases before and just froze it until I needed them.  I don't think I have ever mixed a single serving!  I always make more...3-4 times the amount!

The above mentioned amount makes one large pizza.

I use leftover dough to make mini lunchtime pizzas the next day.  Simply use a cookie cutter to cut small circles.

Spread with tomato sauce, cover with your favourite topping , add your cheese on top and bake the large ones for about 25 minutes in a preheated oven/pizza oven.  The tiny ones take about 10 minutes.

Project 53---------candied orange peel

I don't know if other kids like this, but my sons just love this!

There was a time when my kids were small that we really had it bad financially.  Out of pure desperation on my kids' many requests for "a sweetie mommy" I started making this.  They are all teenagers now, but the can not wait for orange season so that I can make this!

I even dished it up as a desert one night for friends together with a cup of coffee, and they wanted to make it themselves as they love oranges!

I supposed it is reasonably healthy as well, as you have a lot of vitamin C in the peels.  Well, the kids hardly ever has flu in winter, so I believe it can be all the oranges and peels they are eating!

You will need about 6 oranges peels cut into thin slices.  Soak it in water in the fridge until you have enough.  Change the water daily though.  With my family I quickly have enough!  I sometimes even make more at a time as it takes some time to make it.

When you have enough peels, cook it in clean water for about half an hour until soft.

In a large pot bring 500g white sugar and 1 litre of water to the boil.  Allow to thicken a little.

Remove your peels with a slotted spoon and pour into the syrup.  Boil for a couple of minutes, and remove it from the heat.  Allow to cool down totally.  Bring to the boil again for a couple of minutes.  Allow to cool again until it is cold, and repeat the process again.  By the third to fourth boiling session the peels will start to caramelise.  Stir continuously during this time to prevent it from burning.

When it is cooled down, you can store it for quite some time in an airtight container.  Now that the kids are bigger that is not an option in this household!  They even start to peel the next lot of oranges straight away!

Project 52.......a money sock

Any old sock will do for this, but I used one of those disgusting toe socks that seemed like a good idea some time ago, but never worked!  I don't think the inventor of it ever tried it on!  It is really uncomfortable......your toes can't 'breath'!  You later on feel so agitated....you just have to take the socks off.....then all of a sudden YOU can breath!

But I found a better way for using a brand new toe sock! I made a money bag out of it!

If you have four men in your house, you will know that nobody empty their pockets before dumping their washing in the basket.....so I found a way of paying the one doing the washing........simply hang your money sock next to the washing machine and save all the money you -the washer- find in the pockets......surely they did not need it if they left it in the pockets!

It is quite difficult to remove it again from the sock, so you have to save up!  Unfortunately the pockets seem to be emptied more often now before dumping it in the wash.....I wonder why? Ha ha!

I used a plastic peanut butter bottle's lid and carved a big smile out of it with a crafter's knife.  I then glued it into the top of the sock.  I glued a hair elastic band to the outside to secure it.  Glued a face onto it and sewn a ribbon to the top to hang it.

Actually something I can make my housewife friends.  I am sure every housewife would like to earn something for doing the washing!

project 51.........another beaded heart

I told you I like hearts!  Made these some time ago....

I formed a heart in the desired size with a firm wire.

I then took a very fine wire(inside of stove wire!  I simply took the rubber coating off and used the lovely thin strings inside!)  and started making little stems with seed beads!  I made a stem, then wrapped it around the wire once or twice before making another stem.  Continue until the whole wire is filled with masses of little stems.

It is quite time consuming, but a lovely project to do in front of the TV when you do not have to criticise.

I made two with different heart shapes and combined it with a matching ribbon to use on the wall.

PS. The one on the bottom left hand side I bought! Couldn't resist....

Project 50. ..denim hearts.....

I love hearts.....I have made so many different hearts, but unfortunately my four men do not appreciate them!  Too girly!

I made these denim ones from an old denim jean.

Simply cut hearts....hand sew a heart from a different fabric onto one piece(I used some embroidery yarn)....add a button....a strip to hang it....then hand sew the two parts onto each other leaving a space for the stuffing.....stuff it and finish off...

Project 49......Oatmeal cookies

Another cookie recipe for hungry boys......

1 cup white sugar
1 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
1 cup butter
2 tsp vanilla
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
2 1/2 cups flour
1 cup oats
1 cup coconut

Mix everything.  Make balls and pres them down with a fork.  Bake about 14 minutes at 180*C.

Make a cup of coffee.....sit down in the winter sun and enjoy!

project 48.....making coasters

My brother cut me these hardboard circles years ago.   They have been decorated in many ways over the years.  When the do not look goo anymore, I simply remove the decoupaging and start all over again!

Cover the base with modge podge. Cover it with a layer of spray paint in a colour of your choice(I've used a brush to make a couple of golden splashes on the pictures as well, but its up to you!)......stick your picture or serviette to the surface, and then cover it with about 12 layers of modge podge allowing it to dry between every layer.  Change your direction with every layer when you apply them.  Allow to dry properly before using it, otherwise your cup will stick to the bottom and might take some of your picture with!

Simply wipe them with a we cloth when they are dirty.  The lady who's helping to clean in my house has washed them with the dishes a couple of time, but I won't suggest you doing it!  If it does happen, simply place them in the sun to dry properly before using them again.

When you are tired of the pictures or they go ugly, simply pull off the modge podged layer and start all over again.....

project 47-Samoosas!!!!!

Last week my husband got the silly idea to make samoosas!  He is not a cook....but he wanted to make samoosas!

I've made samoosas once before and decided never to do it again!  Too much effort for 5 minutes pleasure!......Easier to buy them!

After begging me to do it, I gave in!  But making him understand he is going to do the rolling of the  dough!  I had to do the proper way not buying the pastry, other wise I was sure I had to do it again!  A woman should always work with a plan!  Especially if you're the only woman in the house!

So we started....we spent the whole morning in the kitchen for 5 dozen samoosas.....the kids came back from school.......and that was it!.......I don't think he will suggest making samoosas again!

Half way through the rolling he got tired!  But that was his job.....he complained that rolling pins were not made for big hands like his, but I ignored........after all.....there are lots of gigantic men cooking and baking all over the world.....He finished off eventually!

I think we tripled the recipe....

Dough:
1 cup flour
2 tbsp warm oil
a little bit of water
salt

Knead this together for quite some time making a thick dough.  Remember you have to roll this out, so it must not be sticky-do not use a lot of water.  Cover with gladwrap and let it rest for half an hour.

Filling:
The original recipe did not have meat in it, but I added mince.
2 large potatoes, cooked and mashed
2 green chillies, deseeded and chopped
1/2 tsp fresh ginger, crushed
1 tbsp coriander leaves, chopped(I did not have and used parsley)
1'2 a lemons juice
1/2 tsp turmeric
1/2 tsp masala
1/2 tsp coriander seeds, crushed
1 tsp red chili powder
salt and pepper
I added an onion and some beef mince

Fry all your spices and the onion in a little olive oil.  Add the mince and when it is brown, add the mashed potatoes.

Now the real work starts!  Roll your pastry paper thin and cut it in rectangles about 5x25 cm.  Keep these rectangles on a wet kitchen cloth as they dry out quite quickly.

Starting at the one end, place a bout a two teaspoons of filling on the dough and start folding your samoosas.  The first two or three will not look exactly you want it, but by the third one you will get the idea.  Fry them in hot cooking oil until done.  The will rise to the top when the are done.

PS.  the filling makes good scrambled eggs the next morning!  Simply throw it in your pan, add some eggs and cook, stirring it all the time.

PS PS PS.....bad photo!  Don't know what the white spots are!  I would not have taken a snap if I saw the spots!  Sorry!  But you all know what a samoosa looks like!

project 46......coffee ice cubes

Both my son and myself are drinking black coffee.  I hate adding cold water.  Then I saw this one...

The ice cubes were originally planned to be used in ice-coffee recipes, but adding it to a hot cup of coffee works just as well.  I even use it for cooking.  I like to cook beef in coffee, but never liked the idea of jugs of coffee standing in the fridge until the day I cook beef stew.  I happen to discard the coffee before I made the stew, and made fresh coffee for my stew.  But this works so well!

When you have leftover peculated coffee, don,t discard it....simply make ice cubes!  When the cubes are frozen, remove it from the container, dump it in a plastic bag.  Keep it in the freezer until needed, and see......absolutely no waste at all!

PROJECT 43-----------making a pot cleaner

Now this is common!  This is kitch!  But it works so well!

I told you I recycle!  Well this is the ultimate recycling project!  If you can recycle this, you can recycle anything!

You will need an empty orange bag.   Yes you're not making a mistake!  An orange bag and some string/leftover wool and a thick needle.

Fold your orange bag in a 10X10 cm square and sew the sides together using your string or wool.  This thing cleans the pots so well that the lady helping me in the house don't even use the bought ones anymore!  She even take some bags to make her own at her own house!

project 42........CRUMBED PORK CHOPS

I am not very fond of pork, but my family loves it.

I've done these the other day.....

Flour mix....

Mix together 1 cup of flour.....2 teaspoons of salt.....2 teaspoons of grated black pepper....1 1/2 tablespoon nutmeg.......1 teaspoon sage.....1 teaspoon paprika..........1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper.....

Egg wash.......

Mix together 2 eggs and 4 tablespoons of water......

You can season your chops with salt and pepper, but I did not as there is quite a lot of salt in the flour mixture.  Nobody added some salt, so I believe it is enough.  Then roll your chop in the flour, dip in the egg wash and roll in the flour again.  Then fry it on the stove top on medium gas in a little cooking oil for about 5 minutes both sides.  I suppose this can be altered according to the thickness of the chops.  Drain on a kitchen towel.  I served it with potato chips(french fries) and a salad.

I really thought that they would be oily, but they were really good!

PROJECT 41: chairs planted with succulents

Years ago I bought these chairs from a friend.  When they went past there due date, I could not get it over my heart to through them out.  They were in the shed for some years, until I recently planted them with succulents.

I removed the base, closed it up with mesh wire, sealed it with weed cover with a couple of drainage holes in it.  to keep the soil in,  filled it wit compost and potting soil and planted it with succulents.  I used some pine cones, nutshells and pebbles as a ground cover.  One or two ornaments.......and now I can not wait for the plants to multiply!

project 40........zooshing up a cake net.....

Maybe you saw this net on a previous post....

I zooshed a cheap food net up by sewing some flowers to the sides....easy as that!  Suppose making your own flowers can be prettier, but these bought ones worked for me!

I used to have a small handcraft shop and used these nets in the shop.  Every now and then I had someone who wanted to buy one!  How awkward!  Anyone can make these!

project 39.......pretzels

Made these last week, but thinking of making it again today or tomorrow......
Going to double the recipe though as they bare really good and the boys said they were not enough!

For 8 large or 16 smaller pretzels.....

2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 t salt
1 tsp sugar
2 1/4 tsp instant yeast
1 cup luke warm water
Knead together and leave to double in size.  knead down and divide in 8-16 equal amounts. Make sausages and fold it like a knot/bow.  Dip it in the following mixture:

Heat 1/2 cup warm water and 1 tbsp baking soda in the microwave for a minute.  There's going to be some of the baking soda it the bottom of the dish, but it i OK.  Dip each pretzel in this mixture and place it on your baking tray.  Allow to stand for 10-15 minutes.

Sprinkle wit coarse salt or cinnamon sugar and bake in a preheated oven for 9-10 minutes at 220*C.

In the meanwhile melt about 4 tbsp butter in the microwave.  When the pretzels are done and brown, remove from the oven and paint your melted butter all over the hot ones.

Faboulishes!

project 38......danish breakfast pies

This one is dedicated to my colleague, Sizwe at work.  He used to buy muffins from a take-away shop on a daily basis, spending quite a lot of money on that.

Then one day I asked him why he does not make his own, as one of our local instant mix brands taste exactly as the ones he's buying......

So geared up with this cheats version in his pocket, he went to visit his mom.....offered to bake......discarded the evidence.......and had the whole families ooh's and ah's!   He even took a photograph to come and show me the results!

I told him about these danish breakfast pies, and this was going to be his attempt this past weekend!

These are really easy and although it says 'breakfast pies', they can be enjoyed all day long.

Another cheat version, but tasting well enough for a house full of men!

You will need a roll of puff pastry, some jam of your choice, and some icing sugar to dust when it comes out of the oven.

Spread your pastry open and divide it in6-8 equal squares with a knife.  Spread the whole surface with jam.  Take all your squares and make cuttings from the four corners to the centre of each square.  Do not cut it right through the centre as your cake will break. It will look like 4 triangles now. Take one end of the first triangle and fold it over to the middle.  Then the same end of the  next one, then the next, then the next. Press the four points in the middle together. This will form a fan.  I used small balls of dough to keep them together as I had leftovers, but it is not necessary.   You can even cut little hearts for valentines, or Christmas trees, whatever you feel like.

Bake it in a hot oven 200*C until it is golden brown. and puffed out.  Dust with icing sugar when it comes out of the oven.  Enjoy!  I am sure you are going to make this again as they are just so easy!

project 45 - pretty upcycled jars

When we moved to the new house, I had to share the small study with my darling hubby!  Unfortunately he is not the neatest in the study!   So I decided to sort my half....more that everybody could see I am not the master of the mess!

I started making these pretty jars from empty coffee bottles to sort my buttons. Aren't they pretty?  even hubby thought they're pretty!

I decoupaged the lids and a small piece of the same paper or material onto the bottles.  I then cut some letters from newspapers and formed the words with this.  I then decorated it with anything I could find in that specific colour.

I still need some more but you only drink so much coffee!

It is fun to make though, as you have no idea what the end product is going to look like....you just plan and add as you go!

Project 44......enlarging a skirt/pants

This one is not really a project, but a tip....but it works so well, I had to share it!

If you have read my previous chat, you'll understand what this is about!  The forever weight problem!

Yesterday morning I wanted to wear a skirt to church, and all of a sudden it shrank in the wash!  I am sure you had that experience as well before!  At first I thought I should have paid more attention to the 'shake promotion' yesterday......then I thought that I should get some exercise.....then I wondered what I should wear to church now.....

Then I remembered something somebody told me about years ago.......I started searching the whole house for an elastic band......I tied it to the buttonhole and all of a sudden I had an extra few centimetres!   See the photo!

I won't suggest you make use of this a lot, but it surely is a great saviour in case of emergency!

I thought afterwards that those elastic things the boys wear around their arms will work great.....very strong elastics.......ha ha!

Saturday 4 August 2012

What a week!...........It is now 00h30 Saturday night/Sunday morning and I am wide awake!

So I decided to tell you about my "very peculiar week thus far" as my very English late mother-in-law would have said!  (I am very Afrikaans, and she was a real English lady....accent and all)

I finished off night duty on Wednesday morning and only slept a few hours to make sure I sleep again during the night .  Quite early I went to bed and slept well until my dearest hubby came to bed!  He has flu and was snoring so badly that I am sure our friends two blocks away could hear him!  I didn't sleep...................................

Still quite grumpy from no sleep I had to get up to take my youngest son to the dentist........

Once a month we travel to our neighbouring town to see an orthodontist.  We usually have a long shopping and to-do-list as well, because our small town just lack in some services!  When we got there- in time for our appointment- we got the sad news that the doctor had a stroke and is in hospital.  But we should not worry....another doctor is on her way from Pretoria......so we waited...............

Now before I continue with this story whilst we are waiting.............when I started working in the hospital I am currently working at, one of my new colleagues stopped me in the passage.  He introduced himself, wished me well, and then he said....."Sister, remember you are working in Africa now....and there is lots of time in Africa!.....everything in Africa is slower.....if you can relax and accept that some things are slower here, you will be fine!"

For my naturally busy  personality it was quite an eye opener!.....but I am fine.....

So back to waiting at the dentist......we waited.............hour and a half later we went in......and a 15 minute appointment ended an hour later!  Needless to say, the to-do-list to be given attention to next month...........

Got home, really tired by now, my husband fell asleep on the couch in front of the fireplace, TV going in the background.....Now.....I hope I'll be forgiven......I left him to snore away on the couch!.........I slept well......my eldest son did not!  He was in the neighbouring room!

All chirpy Friday morning I was busy!  I worked my blog....did some paper mache project....baked pretzels.....and started with supper....

My stephdad lost his eyesight in his one eye about 2 years ago.  Friday I realised how difficult it must be for him........

I cooked....and used chillies.....and without thinking rubbed my eye!  It was insane!  It was burning for almost an hour! That after I rinsed it and after I applied a self improvised eyepatch(big hump of cotton wool drenched with milk!) with a cross of plaster all over the forehead and going down the cheek!  I am a nurse, but boy oh boy!, if something happens in this household.....you are on your own!   Imagine applying the plaster with a runny nose, runny eye, dripping milk, sneezing like madness....at least my sinuses where clear by now!

I finished supper, but the kitchen was in a mess!  It is quite difficult to judge distances with only one eye....I cleaned up and jumped into my pj's!  Whilst getting undressed I thought....our friends are going to come and visit.....and they did.....half an hour later I had to get dressed again....at least we had a great time.....always good to have them around.....

Then it was bed time......and my husbands snoring moved me to the couch now....

Unpleasant night....had to wake up early to wake the boys for their cricket marches.....still in my pj's dragging around the house my parents pitched up to come and watch the rugby-finals with us.....I baked cupcakes....did the caramel filling everything.....

I eventually got dressed!  And was picked up by a friend(see her blog 'my cupcake thighs') to go for a wellness talk and light lunch.....just to realise that it was too good to be true!  It was a product promotion talk!  We sipped on this....we sipped on that.......and after two hours we left without our light lunch!

Yes we do want to loose weight, but we want to eat.....we just love the feeling of something chewable in our mouths!  We're just not shake people!   Even if it is broccoli...cauliflower....as long as it has crunch.....

It's late now....I can hear my hubby snoring from here and I wonder if I am ever going to sleep tonight........

But it was good talking to you!  Hope you have a great night!

Lot of love

Sandra

project 37****************butterflies****************

I am working night duty at the moment.  Super cool to have a whole week off after working a week!  Unfortunately I struggle to sleep the first two off night!  In my old house I used to cook or bake when I could not sleep.  In this house I will wake everybody doing that!  So I spend my time on Pinterest in my attempt not to wake everybody.  I just love the ideas you get there!
This was where I saw the baseline for the next attempt.....sorry,  I sometimes see something elsewhere as well to give me new ideas!

The original butterfly had only a wire outline with lace wings.  I altered it by giving it some colour by sewing seed beads around the wire.

This is such an easy project that even a kid could do this!

 ***************************************************
Simply fold a butterfly out of wire.  Sew some off cut lace over the wings.....sew some beads around the wire.....give it a head and some antennae if you feel like it and see......a pretty butterfly!

I want to hang them outside in a tree.........

project 36.....cheese straws

I used to work in a neighbouring town, and there was a lady selling cheese straws for an income to look after her disabled child.  We all used to support her and ate cheese straws week in and week out!

The other day I thought that I really crave for that taste....so I made some....

I used a roll of bought puff pastry(I am a mom of hungry boys and everything needs to be quick!).  I rolled it open and sprinkled some grated cheddar cheese, grated Parmesan and some aromat(seasoned salt) over.  I folded it double and rolled it flat again.  Folded it double again and rolled it flat.....folded it double and rolled it out.....

I then cut it in 1cm strips and placed it on a cookie tray and baked it at 200*C until it was golden brown and crispy.......

project 35..........milktart

One of our traditional dishes in South Africa is milk tart.  I hate to make it, but my family loves it. So one day a lady brought the staff this one....it is a real cheat version, and the original is just sooo good, but the boys just plunder this one, so why cook the original!  Then my mom came to visit and thought it was good...so now I've converted to the cheats option!

You will need:

Biscuits and melted butter for the crust.  I use 'tennis' or 'marie' biscuits in South Africa...Crumb your biscuits, mix it with the melted butter and press it in your pie dish.

Bring 1 litre of milk to boil.  Mix together 4 eggs, 1 cup of sugar, 3 tbsp cornflour, 3 tbsp flour.  Mix about half a cup of your warm milk with this, and then add the whole lot to the rest of your milk.  Whisk all the way until it thickens.  You'll have to turn the gas down to low to prevent it from burning. Add a blob of butter and a teaspoon of vanilla.

Scoop this mixture onto your base. Sprinkle some cinnamon over and leave to cool to room temperature before placing it in the fridge.

Worth trying this one!

project 34...scones in your snackwich toaster!

Nifty....nifty!

My friend gave me this recipe and I had to try them!  Unfortunately or it can be fortunately....another friend came to visit the first time I was busy making them and between her boys and mine I ran out of cheese by the third batch I made!  Sooo....I added sweetcorn.....and the boys still finished it off!

I then thought that you could really make this recipe your own....maybe add a teaspoon of jam after scooping it into the snackwich pan?  Or add some shredded ham? Who knows all the possibilities?

You've got to try them...and they don't even cause heartburn! Ha ha!

Mix 4 tbsp cooking oil, 1 egg, 3/4 cup milk, 1 cup flour, 2 tsp baking powder (or just use self raising flour right from the start) and 1 1/2 cups grated cheese.

Scoop it into your snackwich toaster and cook until it has browned!  Sooo easy.....sooo good!

project 33....menu of the day....

Living with three teenagers is quite a mission....three teenage boys.....even bigger mission!

When I dish up there is always one who didn't feel like this, or one who would rather have liked to have that.....so I made this sign and hung it where everybody could see....between you and me....the complaints are still there, but they now my opinion....and I just ignore the comments....peace in my kitchen!

I used a piece of scrap wood....gave it a whitewash and wrote my menu in black.  The bent forks I just added to go with something else nearby....but being bent like this....it can be a warning of what could happen to you if you continue complaining!

project 32....zooshing up a chandelier with soda bottle roses

I have figured this one out after seeing a tutorial to make roses from plastic spoons.  I used soda bottles to form the roses, and wow!....was I impressed with my idea!  I then glued the roses to an old chandelier and spray painted the whole thing!  My friend came to visit....she thought I bought it somewhere!

I used soda bottles and cut flower motives with 3 and 4 petals each.  I then stringed them onto a wooden sosatie-skewer, one with 3 petals, then 2-3 with 4 petals....I did not have use for the flowers yet, but I suppose you could use something smaller as well like a paper binder for example.  It is easier to spray paint the flowers by placing it in a flowerpot with soil if you use a skewer though.

I then lit a candle and melted the whole thing.  You need to be careful, as it melts quickly!  The petals start to curl and it forms a perfect rose.  I spray painted them with a base colour and allowed to dry.  I then cut the ends of the skewer off and clued them to my chandelier.  I've cut some leave forms as well and added them to the chandelier.  I then took some wire and made some twirls around the chandelier.....spray painted the whole thing gold......and got a new chandelier!

Can be taken off easily if I need to do something different with the chandelier, but for now it is pretty cool and I'll use it like this for some time1
